How long do you need at Akershus Fortress?

About an hour for the grounds, two to three for a proper visit. Festningsløypa, the free self-guided loop, is 31 points and about 50 minutes at a normal walking pace. Add an hour for Norway’s Resistance Museum. A guided walk that includes the fortress runs about two hours, though it covers central Oslo as well.

The three realistic visits

What is not adding time right now

Akershus Castle, the castle chapel and the Royal Mausoleum are closed to all visitors until further notice, following the death of King Harald V on 28 August 2026. No reopening date has been published. In a normal year the castle interior and the chapel would add another hour to the list above. At the moment they add nothing, which is why the half-day version leans on the museum instead.

Insider tip

Budget the walk in as well. It is 15 to 20 minutes on foot from Oslo Central Station, and the approach from the harbour finishes with a climb. Details on how to get there.

Two hours, with the fortress in it

If you would rather have somebody else do the sequencing, the Best of Oslo walking tour runs about two hours in English or German with the fortress as a named stop. It rates 4.6 from 522 reviews and works as a broad first-morning overview rather than a deep dive on the fortress itself.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to walk around Akershus Fortress?

The self-guided Festningsløypa loop is 31 points and takes about 50 minutes at a normal pace. An unhurried circuit with stops on the ramparts is nearer ninety minutes, and it costs nothing — see is it free.

Can I see Akershus Fortress in an hour?

Yes. An hour gets you the main gate, the castle exterior, the bastions and a stretch of rampart over the harbour. It will not get you the Resistance Museum as well; allow an extra hour for that.

How long are the guided tours?

The museum’s official weekend walks of the fortress run about 55 minutes. The booked walking tours that include the fortress run about two hours and cover central Oslo as well — see guided tours.
