How long do you need at Akershus Fortress?

The three realistic visits

• Forty minutes. In the main gate, up to the ramparts, look at the harbour, walk the castle exterior, out. Enough to say you have seen it, and genuinely worth doing on a tight day.
• An hour and a half. The full Festningsløypa loop at an unhurried pace, with stops. This is the version I would recommend to most people, and it costs nothing.
• Half a day. The loop plus the Resistance Museum, with time on the walls afterwards. The museum needs an hour on its own.

What is not adding time right now

Akershus Castle, the castle chapel and the Royal Mausoleum are closed to all visitors until further notice, following the death of King Harald V on 28 August 2026. No reopening date has been published. In a normal year the castle interior and the chapel would add another hour to the list above. At the moment they add nothing, which is why the half-day version leans on the museum instead.
