Akershus Fortress tour reviews
Six tours sold in Oslo either walk into Akershus Fortress or show it to you from the water. I have written up all six, with the rating and the review count I read off the booking pages on 18 September 2026, and with the part most listings leave out: who each one is wrong for. None of them buys you access to the grounds. The grounds are free and always have been. What you are paying for is a guide, a boat, a bus seat, or entry to a museum.
The six, ranked
Ranked by score, the order is clear enough on paper and misleading in practice, so read the second column as hard as the first. A 4.8 from 515 people and a 4.7 from 2,079 are not really the same claim. The larger the sample, the harder it is to hold a high average, which is why I would not call the evening walk better than the fjord cruise on a tenth of a star.
- 4.8 from 515 — Myths and Legends evening walk. The highest average here, on the smallest sample of the rated five. Folklore and storytelling, after dark, and it goes into the fortress.
- 4.7 from 1,692 — Central Oslo walking tour. The one I point most people at on their first morning. Akershus is a stop on a route that also takes in the Opera House, the cathedral and Karl Johans gate.
- 4.7 from 2,079 — Fjord cruise on the silent boat. The biggest well-rated sample of the six, and the only way to see the whole headland the way it was built to be seen.
- 4.6 from 522 — Best of Oslo walking tour. A second overview walk, and the only one here that also runs in German.
- 4.1 from 2,559 — Hop-on hop-off bus. The weakest score of the six by a distance. It is transport, and it is judged as a tour.
- No rating yet — Home Front Museum private tour. A new listing. Nobody has reviewed it, so there is no score to report and I have not invented one.

What none of them can do this year
Akershus Castle, the castle chapel and the Royal Mausoleum have been closed to all visitors since King Harald V died on 28 August 2026, and the closure runs until further notice with no reopening date published. No tour on this page gets you past that, and any guide who says otherwise is selling you something that does not exist. The grounds and the two museums reopened on 11 September 2026. If your whole reason for coming was the interior, read what is actually shut before you book anything, and whether the visit still stands up without it.
If you only book one thing and you care about the fortress specifically, make it the fjord cruise. The walking tours give you ten or fifteen minutes inside the walls; the boat gives you the whole headland in one frame, and that silhouette is the thing people actually remember.
How I read a score
A rating tells you how well a tour matched what the people who booked it expected. It does not tell you whether you will be one of those people. The hop-on hop-off bus is the clearest case on this page: 4.1 is a poor number next to the others, and reading the reviews, most of the damage comes from visitors who booked transport and graded it as a guided tour. Judged as a way of covering a city whose museums are spread out over a fjord, it does the job. That is why it is still here rather than cut.
The other thing a score cannot do is exist before anyone has left one. The Home Front Museum private tour is new, and a blank is a blank. I would rather tell you that than round it up to a number.
