What to wear at Akershus Fortress

Whatever you would wear for a long city walk with hills in it. The ground surfaces change as you go — you are crossing several centuries of construction — and there are steps between levels. Heels are a bad idea and thin soles get tiring. Nothing here needs boots.
By season
- May to September — a light jacket even on a warm day. The ramparts catch the wind off the fjord and it is several degrees colder up there than at the harbour.
- October and November — waterproof outer layer, and accept that it will be dark by mid-afternoon. Something with a hood beats an umbrella on an exposed wall.
- December to February — proper layers, windproof shell, gloves, and footwear with grip. Paths and steps can be icy and the site is not gritted like a shopping street.
- March and April — the awkward months. Cold mornings, bright afternoons, wet underfoot. Dress for the morning and carry less than you think.
Take the layer off at the bottom and put it on at the top. The climb up from the harbour warms you up and the ramparts cool you down fast, which catches out people who dressed for the walk rather than for standing still and looking at the fjord.
Two practical notes
Dogs are allowed on the grounds all year but must be on a lead. Grilling and open fires are banned year-round, disposable barbecues included, so a picnic here is a cold one.
